Sarah DiRoma of the Onslow County Department of Social Services told Onslow County Today that families are anxious about possible federal budget changes affecting nutrition benefits but that local resources and DSS services remain available.

DiRoma listed local partners — Onslow Community Outreach, Richlands Community Outreach and area churches — that operate food pantries and distributions, and highlighted Operation Kindness Onslow, which maintains a Facebook page with a monthly calendar of pantry dates and resource links. "If she sees something new, she'll share it there as well," DiRoma said of the volunteer who maintains the list.

DiRoma said USDA communications will announce any changes to nutrition benefits and that DSS continues to accept applications. Residents can apply through the ePass portal, call the DSS office or come to the agency in person at 612 College Street in Jacksonville for help. "The benefits just may be delayed. We don't know when they will issue," she said, urging families to use local food networks while the federal picture is uncertain.

DiRoma said DSS staff keep resource sheets and can direct callers to pantries, community outreach and other supports; callers and visitors will be connected with staff who can assist with applications and benefit questions.
