Carson Kusti of the Onslow County Health Department used Onslow County Today to promote men's health awareness and preventive care. He said men often delay care and encouraged yearly physicals, mental-health screening and early intervention to reduce long-term illness.
"Make the appointment, get in, come see us," Kusti said, describing the health department's services including screenings of heart and lung health, BMI checks and referrals for further care when abnormalities are found. He also discussed a family-planning waiver that covers yearly physicals and up to six follow-up visits for problems during the year, and noted STD screening and appropriate blood work are available.
Kusti emphasized mental-health concerns among men, noting a higher risk of suicide and urging family members to help people get screened. He said the health department provides visuals and local statistics in the clinic to increase awareness and that residents can find contact information on the Onslow County Health Department website to schedule appointments.
Kusti framed seeking preventive care as a practical step to preserve long-term health: "Sometimes it's the hardest step for a guy to do is to make that call."
