During the Dec. 3 meeting a committee member raised a public concern about radon testing. Rick reported that 10 radon samples taken during the existing-conditions evaluation averaged "well below the EPA guideline, limit," and concluded no immediate action was required for the existing building.

Rick and Margaret discussed possible mitigation steps for the new building site, noting that siting and lower-floor conditions for the new building could present different radon risks. Margaret said the schematic-design budget will include an allowance for increased ventilation as a mitigation measure. She also noted an alternative — a radon membrane — that might be more expensive upfront but could align better with the project's net-zero energy goals by reducing ventilation energy use.
