Hoffman Estates — The Sustainability Commission presented Community Pride Awards to homeowners and neighborhood associations, recognizing residents who use sustainable gardening and neighborhood-beautification practices.

Sheila Schwartz, a member of the Sustainability Commission, congratulated winners and described the awards as a way to show care for the community. "Remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle," she told attendees.

Organizers said the awards spotlight landscaping and household practices that support pollinators and reduce chemical use. Presenters listed preferred features that earn recognition: butterfly gardens with milkweed and nectar plants, organic fertilizers, composting, carrying take-home containers to restaurants, recycling and the use of solar panels.

Presenters called recipients to the stage for photographs and individual recognition. Winners announced included Dave and Laura Barnett; Hannah Lower Connolly; Frank and Linda DeMore; Mary Darby; Barbara Gimza and Russaw Shohikis (surname pronounced "Euginsky"); the Haverford Place Homeowners Association; the Highland Woods beautification team; Lucy and Tom Kelly; Donna Paulish (not present to accept); Julie Pearson; and Ted and Sherra Fulas. Julie Pearson, who accepted an award, said her property is a Monarch Waystation and "my backyard is really my pride and joy."

An event emcee noted informally that one neighborhood joked it had won the award "300 years in a row," a lighthearted comment made during announcements.

Presenters closed by urging attendees to spread the word and to nominate neighbors in the following year. No formal votes or policy decisions were recorded during the presentation.
