An active youth director told the Birmingham Community Charter High District board that a proposal to convert the parking lot near the Orange Line bus stop into an RV-storage lot could jeopardize student safety and deter riders from using a key transit stop.
"Many of our students and students in the surrounding schools use the bus station in every day to see a school," the speaker, Kayla, said during public comment, adding concerns that the change "may bring folks that are drug abusers" and "increase the exposure of drug use to our students." She also said the change could heighten fear among female students of sexual assault near the stop and suggested some students might transfer to other schools as a result.
Kayla said the lot conversion would also reduce parking for riders and announced a series of community protests on the southeast corner of Algo and Victory Boulevard, offering several time slots for residents to attend.
The board did not take action on the site plan during the meeting. Staff have previously discussed parking impacts and security upgrades elsewhere on the agenda; board members asked clarifying questions about parking loss and steps the district is taking to improve campus safety through cameras and fencing.
