The Salt Lake City Council unanimously adopted a joint ceremonial resolution recognizing Transgender Awareness Week and designating Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025, as Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Council Member Lopez Chavez read the resolution and described the observance’s purpose: raising awareness, sharing stories, and opposing discrimination and violence. The resolution acknowledges the contributions of transgender residents and affirms the city’s commitment to inclusion.

David Torrey, representing the Trans Coalition, accepted the resolution and told the council the measure changes the “emotional landscape” for transgender residents. "A resolution may not change a lot overnight, but it does change the emotional landscape we live in," Torrey said, adding that recognition helps young people and families feel seen.

Dallas Rivas of the Glitter Foundation described a public memorial installed at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with more than 330 names and urged council members and residents to view the memorial and to support policies that protect transgender people.

The resolution passed unanimously. Council members invited the coalition representatives forward for a photo and pledged continued engagement with LGBTQ-serving organizations.
