At the Nov. 18 Transportation & Parking Commission meeting, Franklin Street residents told commissioners the street experiences speeding, tight segments near Prospect and visibility problems at intersections. Speakers emphasized that eliminating parking on one side could increase vehicle speeds and that alternating parking (a chicane) might better calm traffic.
Isabel Miller, who lives near Prospect, said she has not found double‑side parking to be a regular problem except for occasional synagogue events and recommended enforcing distance rules near crosswalks. Longtime resident Margaret (Marj) Brushek said speed is the primary concern and recounted an ambulance detour during a personal medical emergency when parked cars and weather affected access. Councilor Deb Clemmer, who visited homes on the block, reported that residents preferred traffic calming over single‑side removal and suggested a chicane design for further study.
DPW and planning staff said they will take the suggestions under advisement and may prepare chicane options for later public review. DPW also noted that a separate ordinance change to prohibit parking within 10 feet of crosswalks is moving to City Council and could address some visibility concerns.
