Joe Sintaro, introduced in the meeting record as mayor of Dana, told LaSalle County highway officials that he and residents are seeing motorists "fly" through three downtown blocks on Washington Street where children congregate at a school bus stop, and that a prior experiment with stop signs and flashing lights reduced speeds before the signs were removed after complaints.
"I'm just here today just to ask you to reconsider for a problem that we see," Sintaro said, describing calls from neighbors and one historical incident when a child was struck but recovered.
The exchange matters because the stretches Sintaro described are county highways and changes to official traffic control are governed by county criteria and state guidance. Highway staff told the meeting the temporary stop signs had been placed without county jurisdiction and that the traffic-control manual advises that stop signs "should not be used for speed control." Staff recommended a lawful alternative rather than reauthorizing stop signs on a county highway.
County highway staff offered county-owned, solar-powered radar speed-display signs—post-mounted units that show drivers’ measured speeds and flash when motorists exceed the posted limit—as an immediate compromise. "We've got them sitting in our sign shop," a county staff member said, adding the units have been effective in other municipalities at slowing drivers.
Board participants summarized a compromise: recognize that speeding through Dana is a safety problem but that stop signs on a county highway may not meet engineering criteria. The board and staff agreed to have county crews mount two radar speed-display signs, monitor their effect, and revisit the issue in roughly six to 12 months.
Sintaro said he would be willing to report back on local observations after the signs are installed. County staff said the units are already purchased and in inventory and that mounting logistics would be coordinated after the meeting.
The immediate next step recorded in the meeting was staff and the mayor coordinating to mount the signs; the board proposed to review the signs' effectiveness after the agreed trial period.
