At the Nov. 19 board meeting, Superintendent Capello presented the district's biannual Student Safety Data System report generated from the New Jersey Homeroom data collection system. He explained the two reporting periods (report period 1: Sept.–Dec.; report period 2: Jan.–June), noted that report period 2 covers a larger portion of the school year and therefore often shows higher totals, and asked the board to consider trends longitudinally.
Capello outlined the types of incidents captured by the system — harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB), violence, vandalism, substance abuse and behaviors that lead to removal from the academic program such as suspension — and said the district tracks both training programs and incident outcomes. He said the agenda highlights training programs for staff and students in 2024–25 and that many schools front-load programming early in the school year.
On incident trends, Capello said "in almost all of the columns there, the number of incidents that led to removal, were down," and emphasized that "even one incidence of violence is one too many." He urged parents and community members to review the online agenda materials for detailed numbers, and invited feedback from the board and public about areas with upticks so administrators can analyze causes and consider alternatives to removal when appropriate.
Capello said the district has asked principals to examine practices that might reduce removals and preserve student connection to the academic program, calling removal a last resort and pointing to a mix of disciplinary measures and preventative programs. He also said the district is required to report data to the New Jersey Department of Education biannually and that the data should inform programming and practice rather than be "put on a shelf."
