The Eden Prairie City Council recognized four recipients of the ninth annual Sustainable Eden Prairie awards and adopted a proclamation naming Nov. 29 as Small Business Saturday during its Nov. 18 meeting.
Student commissioners Eva Muhlenberg and Avani Maheshri opened the awards presentation. Lillian Buttes introduced Buy Nothing Eden Prairie, which promotes reuse and community exchange; Atharva Sarma introduced Winnebago Industries for volunteer planting and support of Friends of Eden Prairie Parks; Ashida Tawari introduced Chris Adams for salvaging and reusing construction materials; and Haley Rice presented Applewood Point, a 100‑unit senior co‑op that has built an organic recycling program now used by about 60 of its units.
Student commissioner Simon Shetty closed the program, thanking award recipients and fellow student presenters. "Buy Nothing Eden Prairie, Winnebago Industries, Applewood Point, and Chris Adams," Shetty said, offering congratulations to the winners.
After the awards, Mayor Case read a proclamation declaring Small Business Saturday for Eden Prairie on Nov. 29, citing Hennepin County statistics and encouraging residents to support local merchants. The proclamation text included a statistic that "68 cents of every dollar spent at a small business in the United States stays in the local community" and referenced U.S. Census data for Hennepin County small-business counts.
No formal council votes were required for the awards or proclamation; both were presented as recognitions and announcements.
