Donine Young, a CTE teacher and coordinator at Sunset Junior High, used the public comment period to describe recent successes in Davis School District’s computer and programming classes and to urge expansion to include programming drones.

“Students with experience in programming drones will have an advantage in being hired by top level companies,” Young said, noting that the district’s ninth-grade exploring computer science classes earned top test scores in the state for two consecutive years. She told the board the program will include demonstrations by local law enforcement and a December visit from Hill Air Force Base’s bomb squad unit.

Young outlined the district’s facilities and instruction plans, saying the new building’s flex lab will allow hands-on practice with physical devices. She also framed drone programming as a pathway to employment in protective forces and industry and invited board members to visit the school to observe classes.

The board thanked Young for the update during the comment period; no formal action was taken at the meeting.

The district’s CTE expansion was presented as a community partnership initiative, with demonstration visits scheduled and further details to be provided by school staff.
