Maggie Stanton, director of the West Chester Library, presented the library’s annual report to the borough council on Nov. 18, saying the library serves a service area of about 53,000 people across seven municipalities and has seen nearly an 18% increase in cardholders.
Stanton said the library recorded more than 140,000 checkouts in 2024 and reported substantial increases in programming and attendance last year. The collection totals roughly 46,800 items; the library has begun a small-fee seven-day rental collection intended to improve access and generate modest revenue. Stanton told council that municipal support provides roughly one-third of the library’s funding while donations and other earned revenue make up much of the remainder.
On facilities, Stanton said the borough has budgeted a structural assessment for 2026; an engineer had not yet been selected. She reported that recently funded window work is planned to proceed and that the exterior elevator is functional and used several times per week for accessibility and strollers. Councilors pressed for clarity on timelines and asked staff to coordinate with the county library system for details on state funding formulas.
Stanton closed by outlining goals for 2026 that include expanded adult programming, continued outreach across the service area, and partnerships for events in parks and municipal spaces. Council thanked Stanton and moved routine follow-up items to the consent agenda for the upcoming voting session.
