At its Nov. 18 meeting the Fall River Historic Commission approved four preservation-related actions and agreed to write letters of support for three Community Preservation Committee (CPC) funding applications.
Deck/porch at 162 French Street
The commission reviewed a homeowner application to replace and extend a front porch at 162 French Street. Applicant Manuel Fitaro described the work as an in-kind replacement and an extension of roughly 6 feet to correct a door clearance and add two parking spaces. Commissioners emphasized design-guideline compliance and materials that are paintable or wood-like; the commission approved the proposal on a roll call vote with the recorded responses of Connie Soule, Joyce Rodricks, Caroline Alban, Ryan Klein and Chairman Rick Mancini voting yes.
Saint Luke’s Church — letter of support for repointing
Reverend Hornsby requested a letter of support for a CPC application to repoint and repair the church tower (phase 1 estimated at about $150,000) to address a water leak the applicant attributed to structural cracking. Commissioners asked that the work follow the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation; Reverend Hornsby agreed. The commission voted to provide a letter of support.
Old 2nd District Courthouse — windows
Grace Girling, executive director of Greater Fall River Recreation, asked the commission to support a project to replace 67 windows at the old courthouse; she said contractors would follow the Secretary of the Interior standards. Commissioners voted to provide a letter of support for the application.
Eagles Restaurant & Event Center — restoration support
Christopher Donovan presented plans to restore deteriorated historic windows and exterior features at the Eagles building and to reuse or replicate original elements wherever possible. He asked for a historical commission letter to support his CPC application and confirmed intent to follow Secretary of the Interior standards; the commission voted to provide the requested support letter.
Votes and motions recorded in the minutes reflect unanimous approval of the items above by the commissioners present. The commission also tabled earlier meeting minutes until the December meeting and scheduled PAL-related follow-ups as part of ongoing work on the Highlands local historic district.
