Steve Torres, the district's security supervisor, told the board during a Nov. 18 public hearing that the district is updating its district-wide school safety plan to comply with a New York State requirement described in the presentation as "Desha's Law," which requires a cardiac emergency response plan in every public school by Jan. 20, 2026. "The core components of this are cardiac emergency response teams at each building, CPR/AED awareness training for all students and staff, AED placement and maintenance, and regular inspection," Torres said.
Torres said the updated plan will identify cardiac emergency response teams for each school, expand CPR/AED awareness efforts for students and staff, ensure clear AED placement and maintenance procedures, and include at least one annual SERP (cardiac emergency response) drill per building. He said he would not read the entire statutory language but summarized the operational steps the district plans to take to meet the deadline.
No members of the public spoke in response to the hearing, and the board closed the hearing and returned to regular business.
What happens next: the district will incorporate the cardiac emergency response plan into its district-wide school safety plan and complete the work needed to meet the Jan. 20, 2026 deadline described in the presentation.
