La Plata — Town Manager Chuck Stevens told the council Nov. 18 that the town mailed postcards to more than 4,000 utility account addresses to notify residents about changes to trash and recycling pickup for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday weeks.

Stevens said the postcards cost about $1,600 and were printed and sent to the post office with delivery expected before the holiday week. The changes move Thursday pickups to the preceding Tuesday and Friday pickups to the preceding Wednesday; recycling pickup and yard waste schedules remain unchanged.

Stevens said the town is using multiple communication tools because not all residents are on social media and the town lacks a local print newspaper. He also told the council that the meeting scheduled for next Tuesday was canceled because there were no agenda items.

Why this matters: the postcard campaign is intended to reduce resident confusion during holiday service changes. Residents impacted by the shift are those whose normal collection day falls on Thursday or Friday during the holiday weeks.

Next steps: staff will continue social-media and other outreach; the town will hold the next regular meeting as scheduled and has canceled the special meeting for next Tuesday.
