During public comment, resident John (Speaker 9) read a letter asking why a picnic table and benches he and others donated and built in 2020 were removed from the Little Park. John said the chain that linked the tables was removed over concern it was a tripping hazard and asked that the table either be returned to the park or reinstalled and secured; he offered to secure it himself.
Selectmen and Parks & Recreation representatives responded that stewardship of the Little Park is managed through Parks & Rec, noted a shortage of volunteers since the park’s construction and said the town bears responsibility for ongoing maintenance once donated items become municipal property. Parks & Rec defended recent maintenance work, noted improvements to the common and public paths, and said volunteers and staff have limited capacity. The board asked John to contact Parks & Rec to pursue the request and said the selectmen would follow up on the letter he submitted to the selectmen’s office.
Speakers also discussed the Parks & Rec annual budget ($7,500 noted in the meeting), volunteer recruitment efforts and the need to place any substantive volunteer‑assignment or funding decisions on a future agenda so the board could vote. No formal action was taken at the meeting to change Parks & Rec stewardship or to return the table; the board said they would respond to John’s written letter and coordinate next steps.
