Mr. Gorrell presented planned mechanical upgrades at Lee's Summit North, telling the committee the school still uses original rooftop equipment more than 30 years old. Engineering review and cooperative purchasing led staff to recommend replacing the three large units with like-for-like, air-cooled systems rather than converting to a different platform; staff cited structural and ductwork constraints and corrosion problems with the existing water-source equipment.
Cost and schedule: background material lists equipment purchase at about $4,148,000 and a total construction cost near $7.3 million (equipment plus installation), figures Mr. Gorrell attributed to the district's estimator, Navigate. Staff said they expect installation work to occur primarily during the summers of 2026 and 2027, with exact phasing to be developed with the selected mechanical contractor.
Procurement approach: staff will bring an installation contract for award after equipment is ordered; the equipment purchase was presented now to allow advance ordering so work can begin next summer. Gorrell said the district used cooperative purchasing and preconstruction cost estimating to test pricing and value.
Other facilities items: Gorrell also described replacement of wide-area mowers via cooperative purchasing and a request to buy a larger trailer for Lee's Summit North Marching Band to allow a professional driver and reduce volunteer logistics.
Next steps: equipment orders and bidding for installation will continue; staff will return to the board with recommended contracts and final phasing.
