Akron Public Schools on Monday presented plans for a consolidated pre‑K through eighth‑grade school on the site of the former Kenmore High School, saying the building would replace aging facilities and add modern classrooms and performing‑arts space.
Mike Antonucci, the city’s planning and zoning administrator, told the Planning and Economic Development Committee the proposed two‑story structure would total about 150,000 square feet and include a gymnasium, dining area and a 750‑seat theater. Antonucci said the facility is designed to accommodate "roughly 750 students and 90 employees." He said the school would sit on the west end of the site, preserve open space for athletic fields and include dedicated play areas for different grade bands.
Zach Forney, the project architect, identified the team and said he was available to answer questions. Deborah Folk, Akron Public Schools’ executive director of business affairs, called the plan a generational opportunity and urged approval, saying the new building would combine Piper Elementary and Miller South School for visual and performing arts into a single, upgraded campus.
Councilwoman Sharon Conner and Councilwoman Tina Boyes both expressed support, with Conner noting the importance of upgraded performing‑arts facilities and Boyes saying the three‑block site is ‘‘smack dab in the middle of housing’’ and would allow nearby families to walk to school.
Planning staff and the planning commission recommended approval subject to standard conditions including sidewalk coordination and tree preservation efforts. The committee took no final vote Monday and will hear the item again at 5:00 p.m., when it will make a recommendation to the full council.
