Superintendent Steve, speaking for the ALBERT LEA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT, opened the first community task-force meeting by saying the district has been working through recent budget reductions and a strategic-plan rollout and needs public input to guide long-term facility decisions. "Part of what's going on is staff will see a questionnaire come out in the next few days," he said, asking the community to help shape recommendations.
The task force — about 26 official members including parents, teachers, school leaders, city officials and board members — will review how facilities and operational costs align with current and future educational needs and produce recommendations for the school board. "The charge of this group is to study how the district's facilities and operational costs align with current and future educational needs," consultant Sal with Wold Architects & Engineers told the group.
Sal and Paul Durban, the district's executive director of management operations, emphasized fiscal constraints: the superintendent said the district has cut roughly $3.6 million from the budget over the last two years, and the task force must recommend changes that are financially attainable and that do not push the district into statutory operating debt. "We want to make sure that our recommendations are in compliance with the educational goals and strategic plan," Sal said.
The group will meet five times (approximately every two weeks), with meetings planned from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; the consultants said they expect to have community-informed recommendations prepared for the board by early next year. Logistics, including an online recording of the meeting and posted materials, were promised so community members who could not attend could review the data.
What happens next: the consultants will distribute the questionnaire to staff and the public, continue a series of data presentations at upcoming sessions and work with the task force to develop options for the board to consider. The meeting adjourned for a short break and reconvening logistics were confirmed.
