The Wallingford School District Instructional Committee on Nov. 17 agreed by consensus to send three proposed changes to the district's course catalog to the full school board for formal action.
Christy Manganci, the district mathematics coordinator, told the committee the Geometry and Construction elective has failed to run at either high school for the last four years because of low student and teacher interest, and that it makes the scheduling process "bulky." "We couldn't get it off the ground, and it's making the scheduling process, bulky," Manganci said. The committee took consensus on the deletion and the chair declared "Motion carries." The item will be considered at the regular board meeting.
Manganci also recommended deleting the Algebra 2 CCP 2 level, saying the district's new financial algebra option allows juniors to take a pathway that makes the CCP-level section unnecessary. "Students now with our algebra financial course have the option to take that as a junior, and then, they have the option to continue on to algebra 2 in their senior year," Manganci said. The committee again took consensus to forward the change to the full board.
A third action would delete "Topics in Mathematics" and replace it with a rebranded "Senior Mathematics Seminar," a student-driven course that Manganci described as "a very similar course" but with a clearer name tailored to seniors' post‑high‑school plans. The committee signaled support and moved the rebranding forward to the full board.
All three items were advanced by consensus votes during the instructional committee meeting; the committee's role was to vet and recommend changes, not to adopt them. The full board will consider formal motions and any final votes at a subsequent meeting.
What happens next: the three course changes will appear on the regular board meeting agenda for final approval. The committee did not record formal mover/second names or a numeric roll-call tally in the instructional meeting transcript; members present voiced approval by saying "aye," and the chair announced each motion as carried.
