A committee update at the Caldwell-West School District Board of Education meeting on Nov. 17 outlined changes to instructional supports and a new inclusion program for middle-school students.

A curriculum and technology committee member reported the district engaged an ESL consultant who visited GCMS and Lincoln staff to co-plan and co-teach lessons intended to strengthen supports for language learners, and said the K–12 ESL team is aligning supports and parent engagement across schools. The committee also reviewed cohort trends in math and ELA/JSLA scores to identify grade-level and cohort patterns.

The district has revised its teacher-evaluation process to emphasize student discourse in classrooms, the committee member said, adding that evaluators now hold pre- and post-lesson conversations with teachers to plan and reflect on opportunities for student talk and engagement.

The committee reported technology-fee collection rates of 100% at GCMS and 85% at the high school; students with financial hardship are excused from the fee. A board member asked the committee to return at its Dec. 1 meeting with options to reduce burdens on households with multiple children, including a possible family fee cap or cap on per-student charges.

Miss Mandara (presented in the committee report) outlined a peer partnership program launching at GCMS to promote social and academic inclusion for students with and without disabilities. The presenter described structured activities including academic games, social-skills groups, art projects and reading sessions and said parental permission slips will be required for identified students.

Superintendent (unnamed) also noted upcoming high-school fall performances, saying tickets will be available at the door and students may attend free; the transcript referenced an additional Sunday performance but did not specify the date or time.

The board did not take separate action on curriculum discussion items beyond approving the curriculum consent items on the evening's consent agenda. The committee's recommendations and the requested family-fee examination will return for follow-up at upcoming meetings.
