Rep. Michael Baumgartner told Spokane County Spotlight that the '1 Big Beautiful Bill,' also called the Working Families Tax Cut, is a sweeping package meant to prevent a large tax increase and to provide targeted relief for families, seniors and small businesses.
"If we had not passed the 1 Big Beautiful Bill, you would have seen the largest tax increase in America's history because that 2017 tax reduction only about half of those lower were made permanent," Baumgartner said. He described provisions such as lower taxation of tips, extended tax relief for seniors on Social Security, full depreciation for business investments to encourage hiring, and a child/retirement savings mechanism that places $1,000 for each new baby into a growth account.
Baumgartner characterized the bill as pro-jobs and supported by agricultural and business groups: "That's why the 1 big beautiful bill was supported by the Farm Bureau, supported by the Chamber of Commerce, supported by small business groups, manufacturers across the country." He told the program that the package would help family farms and local businesses and could spur investment in Eastern Washington.
The interview relayed the congressman's description of the package; he did not provide bill text or enactment status during the segment.
