The Mount Vernon Police Department released a monthly update describing several recent arrests and traffic enforcement actions in the city. The department said officers arrested a hotel guest after complaints he was walking on other guests' patios in only underwear and possibly exposing himself; officers later found the man had outstanding warrants for assault, violation of a court order and drug possession and booked him into the county jail.
In an account of the hotel response, an MVPD officer told the man, 'You got some warrants out for your arrest currently, and the jail is willing to accept.' The officer then told the man he would be placed under arrest.
The report also described a DUI arrest on the 8th, at about 5:15 p.m., after officers stopped a driver who crossed the center line multiple times while entering Mount Vernon. Officers saw open alcohol containers in the vehicle and the driver had difficulty maintaining balance when asked to step out; additional small liquor bottles were found under the driver's seat.
Two separate narcotics investigations on East College Way resulted in charges of possession with intent to deliver. In the first stop, officers on the 100 block said a canine sniff and a search warrant turned up methamphetamine, fentanyl, digital scales and prescription medication. In the second stop, just before 11 p.m. on the 13th, a canine alert and a search warrant yielded what the department described as a large quantity of narcotics plus scales and packaging materials; the department did not specify exact amounts.
Traffic enforcement near a Mount Vernon high school during dismissal led to a citation and booking. Officer Paul Schietti of the Mount Vernon Police Department told a driver he had stopped them for using a cell phone in a busy school zone and admonished that 'this is the worst place you could have probably chose to do that is in a busy school zone right after school gets out.' The driver was cited for driving with a suspended license, using an electronic device while driving, and no insurance, and was booked on outstanding warrants.
The department closed the update by noting local recovery resources and directing listeners to Skagit Rising for connections to detox, inpatient and outpatient treatment. 'If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, help is available,' the presenter said, and provided the organization's website for more information.
No new policy changes or formal votes were announced in the update; the release summarized enforcement actions and community resources.
