Councilmember Hernández introduced a resolution to designate November as Transgender Recognition Month in Los Angeles, framing the measure as both recognition and a call to action for services and protections. Hernández thanked community organizers and named local groups, saying the month “is a moment to celebrate resilience and contributions” and also “a moment of reflection” about lives lost to violence and gaps in medical care.
Speakers from the Coalition Trans Latina and other advocacy groups urged the council to fund services and housing. Julia Wom of the Coalition Trans Latina told the council she supports a proposal identified in the meeting as an investment of $4,000,000 for TGI services and said many trans Latinas face homelessness and discrimination in shelters; she said training for shelter staff is insufficient: “...solo 12 por 112 por 100 de los albergues han sido capacitaciones de TGI.”
Councilmembers who seconded or supported the resolution tied the proclamation to future budget decisions, urging dedicated funding for wellness centers, housing solutions and legal protections. Councilmember Hot and others urged continued advocacy and implementation beyond the symbolic recognition.
Next steps: The proclamation was introduced and endorsed from the dais; several councilmembers and community members asked staff and budget offices to identify funding paths so the recognition can be paired with concrete investments.
