The Coconut Creek City Commission on Monday authorized Kilowatt Electric Company to purchase and install FDOT‑approved LED streetlight luminaires along Lyons Road from the Sawgrass Expressway north to the city limit.
City staff said the project will replace 43 high‑pressure sodium fixtures, add two additional poles where coverage was missing, upgrade two degraded services and install backside shields to reduce impacts on adjacent residences. The project was described as taking about 90 days after the notice to proceed is issued; staff indicated fixture lead time is roughly four to five weeks and hole/pole lead time about eight weeks.
"This project will replace 43 existing high pressure sodium light fixtures with the FDOT‑approved LED fixtures," staff said, noting shields would reduce impacts on residential properties. A Kilowatt representative (Miss Flack) attended to answer technical questions.
Commissioners asked about timing near Lyons Creek Elementary and urged contractors to avoid rush‑hour disruption; staff said installations will occur during daytime and preconstruction conferences will flag local traffic restrictions to contractors. Staff also noted that ownership of many fixtures south of Sawgrass is split among FDOT and Florida Power & Light, and that approximately 60% of fixtures in the southern section remain high‑pressure sodium and will be replaced when those owners perform maintenance or when city projects cover them.
The motion to authorize the purchase and installation was moved, seconded, and approved by roll call.
