The Coconut Creek City Commission voted to authorize a revocable license agreement with Broward County that allows the city to install, operate and maintain school‑zone speed detection systems on Coconut Creek Parkway and Wildes Road.
Captain Shelton described the program and said a second, separate license will be presented later for additional Lyons Road locations. Staff said permits for city streets are largely ready and that the county must approve signage; installations for city streets could begin around Dec. 1, with activation deferred until after a warning and public‑education phase. The commission discussed timing for that education phase and favored beginning the 60‑day warning period after the winter holidays and school resumption to avoid surprising residents during the Christmas period.
Commissioners also discussed how the county would administratively sign a previously approved RLA and clarified the enforcement tolerance. Vice Mayor Wasserman and Captain Shelton described the operational threshold as allowing enforcement for speeds "anything over 10" mph above the posted limit; Captain Shelton said the system is intended to warn first and then move to enforcement after the education period.
"We have a 6 day warning phase that will go out," Captain Shelton said, and staff confirmed a broader 60‑day education phase would follow in January to inform parents, schools and drivers. Commissioners urged robust outreach including ParentLink messages and school communication to ensure parents and pass‑through drivers are aware.
The resolution was moved and approved by roll call. Staff will coordinate final signoff with Broward County traffic engineering and return with updates as permit and installation dates are finalized.
