Prince George’s County Public Schools officials on Oct. 15 described plans to modernize the district’s 23‑year‑old Oracle business system and posted a narrowed request for proposals to hire an implementer for a cloud migration.
Dr. Zuckerman, PGCPS’s chief of technology, told the committee an Oracle cloud ERP will replace the district’s aging on‑premises instance and said "ERPs are complex, massive, business information systems" that manage payroll, purchasing, budgeting and human capital. He said the district released an RFP in July, narrowed its scope to clarify the cloud migration, and reposted the RFP during the committee meeting window.
Dr. Zuckerman said vendor selection should take place over the next "6 to 8 weeks" with a hoped‑for project kickoff in January or February. He described the project as multiyear and multimillion‑dollar and said the district expects to sequence work by pillars (human capital/payroll first, then financials and budget) but will finalize sequencing once an implementer assesses the district's processes and data.
Board members asked why the timeline could extend to 3–5 years. Zuckerman emphasized the risk and time required for process design and data testing: "You don't wanna get the data transfer wrong, especially when we're talking about payroll." He said the district aims to run requirement‑setting, design and data migration/testing for each pillar and expects to take care to avoid payroll disruptions.
Chief Howell added that district teams have already begun interim changes in the existing Oracle system to meet immediate reporting requirements and to support the Blueprint implementation while the cloud migration proceeds.
The committee received the procurement update as informational. The district did not request immediate board action on contracting during this meeting; staff said they will bring recommended contracts and implementation timelines after vendor selection.
