Members of the Marine and Environmental Resource Committee voted to make the committee’s monthly recognition official and to record the formal name in the minutes.

A committee member said the origin of the name was unclear in the archival records, and another member moved that the award name reflect the committee’s abbreviation. The committee voted in favor of officially calling the recognition the “Murph award” going forward.

Separately, members nominated and approved College Hunks Hauling Junk for a Murph award in recognition of volunteer work during the community coastal cleanup. The committee discussed inviting the group to a future meeting so the award can be presented and publicly recognized.

The committee also discussed handling retroactive awards and using part of the donation money to order physical plaques for upcoming recipients, and agreed to return to any retroactive awards only when the budget and contribution records permit.
