John Mogue, director of Riverfront Park, told the Park Board on Nov. 13 that staff installed a new point‑of‑sale system to address security, accounting and online‑service limitations of the previous 25‑year system.
"If you don't know what a point of sale system is, it's a fancy cash register," Mogue said as he described new features including online reservations, improved reporting and cloud‑based security to reduce network risk. He said the previous system risked non‑compliance with PCI standards and required substantial manual reconciliation by city accounting.
Mogue also reviewed winter preparations: the park is set to open its ice season Nov. 22; staff have installed an automated skate‑sharpening machine and begun ice preparation. He said the park finished wayfinding and new signage on the pavilion and added river‑safety icons on maps in coordination with Avista.
Operations additions include a two‑seat ranger ATV intended to reduce mileage on larger vehicles and improve ranger accessibility for visitors. Mogue said the park also completed a new stretch of river‑bank fencing and will continue fence work on the north bank in spring.
Events and programming highlights included sold‑out concerts this fall, ghost‑tour attendance of more than 350 people, and a new Holiday Village under the pavilion funded by a pavilion naming partner. Mogue said staff will continue to expand online services for rentals and reservations as the new system goes live.
Next steps: Riverfront Park will continue equipment integration, prepare for upcoming holiday events, and transition more customer services online.
