The Troy Human Rights Commission’s Beloved Community Planning Team chair reported plans for a Jan. walk from the senior center to Richard’s Chapel, a program with a speaker and award presentations, and a community luncheon with volunteers and donations requested.
The chair said the event will start with a walk at about 9:30 a.m., a service at 10:30 a.m., and lunch scheduled for about 11:30 a.m., with the event concluding by about 12:30 p.m. Two award winners will be disclosed in January; the team is still procuring a speaker and catering.
Commissioners and team members offered names to consider as speakers and volunteers. Speaker 4 said Sharee (a pastor and team member) had given a strong speech at a historical marker event and that she would be added to the list of possible speakers. The chair said the team takes "monetary donations and boots on the ground" and invited anyone willing to help to make themselves known.
The chair asked the city to consider official participation on the team, noting that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday and that city support—such as a proclamation—would be welcome. The chair also said county officials often participate in the walk and requested similar city involvement.
The commission did not take a formal vote on any funding or city commitments during the meeting; the item was presented for planning and outreach. The commission expects to return with updates at future meetings.
The HRC adjourned after routine business; no public comments were received.
