The Heritage Commission informed the Select Board that a sealed box of commemorative coins—reportedly created for a 250th anniversary—has been stored in the town clerk’s office for roughly 15 years. The box exterior indicates proceeds were intended to fund the town’s 300th anniversary; however, the actual contents and quantity of coins were not known.
A motion passed directing town staff to open the box, count and inventory the coins, and film an 'unboxing' event with help from library staff to document the process for the public. Board members discussed possible outcomes (the box might be empty, contain collector coins, or contain tokens) and asked staff to report back on the inventory and options for selling any coins in accordance with prior direction noted on the box.
The board asked staff to coordinate with the town clerk and provide a subsequent recommendation to the Select Board on how to handle proceeds, if any, and to follow the prior direction that proceeds be used toward the town anniversary fund if applicable.
