The Public Safety Committee approved an agreement with the Fluvanna Fire District to house Fly Car M74 and a medic at a previously unmanned station (address given in discussion as 3496 Turnaround). County staff said that because the station is now staffed 24 hours a day the electric bill increased; the county will pay electricity costs in lieu of rent.

County staff could not provide an exact monthly bill but said the cost appears to be in the neighborhood of $150 per month; earlier estimates had been much lower when the station was unmanned. The staff explained that the county added a window air conditioner to maintain station conditions over the summer and that a more efficient HVAC solution is likely needed later.

Committee members asked whether heating costs were included; staff said the district had not requested additional county support for heating. Members also discussed longstanding informal ("handshake") arrangements at other stations and said they are moving to formalize agreements.

The committee approved the agreement by voice vote and thanked county staff for the presentation. Implementation will require executing a written agreement specifying the electricity cost arrangement.
