The Board of Supervisors formally approved the appointment of Nicole Coburn to the position of County Executive Officer following a nationwide search. Ajita Patel, human resources director, told the board the search drew 139 applicants and included a multi-day selection process and a technical panel of community stakeholders; the board unanimously supported Coburn as the final candidate.
Patel reported Coburn accepted a step-6 appointment at an hourly rate equivalent to an annual salary of $352,393 and a benefits package consistent with other executive managers under county personnel regulations. Counsel and staff confirmed Coburn 's anticipated start date as Oct. 25. After public comments in support and an hour of board remarks, Martinez moved recommended actions; the roll-call vote was unanimous "Aye," and Coburn recited the oath of office on the record.
Why it matters: The CEO position manages daily operations of county government and coordinates interdepartmental efforts on housing, emergency response, resilience and the County work program. The board framed the appointment as continuity from an experienced internal candidate who has been serving as executive assistant CEO since 2017 and brings fiscal and operational knowledge.
What happens next: Coburn will assume duties following the Oct. 25 start date. Staff will proceed with onboarding and an administrative transition plan; the board recessed briefly to take photos and hold a short recess after the swearing-in.
