Students in Norfolk Junior High’s communications production (CP) program described their work producing JH News, social‑media posts and yearbook/slideshow projects at the Nov. 11 Board of Education meeting, telling trustees how the class teaches technical and professional skills.
“My name is Amanda Friedo, and I am from the Norfolk Junior High School,” teacher Amanda Friedo told the board as students demonstrated video and social media skills they have learned. Several students emphasized time management and teamwork developed through the program; one student said, “We are the voices of Norfolk Junior High School.”
Separately, the district outlined an In‑School Savings Program in partnership with Elkhorn Valley Bank. Teaching & Learning director Jared Oswald said the bank operates a branch in schools once every two weeks to encourage consistent saving. Oswald reported that on the first day across seven elementary schools 118 students made deposits totaling $1,265.63 and that Elkhorn Valley Bank is matching initial deposits up to $5 per student; the bank will also partner with the district foundation to make savings interest benefit the foundation. Oswald noted the fourth graders chosen as tellers had to apply and interview for the role.
The board also recognized Tracy Shohan, a school psychologist, with the district’s Award for Excellence; Shohan received a plaque, a $50 Hy‑Vee gift card and $500 to use with building principals to benefit students. “I humbly accept this,” Shohan said upon receiving the honor.
