Steven Paulson, an AP Human Geography teacher at Greeley Central High School, was honored by the Greeley-Evans School District 6 board on Nov. 10 after being named Colorado Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Dr. Pilch introduced a video and several colleagues who described Paulson’s classroom practices and student-centered approach.
Colleagues and students credited Paulson with creating strong academic expectations and broad, sustained mentorship efforts. One presenter said Paulson organized career mentors for nearly 90 sophomore students and helped students earn "more than $10,000,000 in scholarships" over his tenure as a mentor. "He brings people together in ways that strengthen our entire school community," a speaker said.
In accepting the recognition, Paulson thanked colleagues, students and family and said he had declined further national consideration. "I did withdraw from the National Teacher of the Year, and that was by choice because I don't want to take a year long sabbatical," Paulson said in his remarks. He added that he felt honored to represent his district and that the award reflected the work of many people who supported him.
Board members and the superintendent praised Paulson’s work. Superintendent Pilch said the district was honored and noted the state-level recognition. Members of the public and district staff stood to salute Paulson’s work in classrooms and in organizing programs that link students with career mentors and scholarship opportunities.
The board’s recognition was ceremonial; no board action beyond the presentation was taken. The district plans to spotlight Paulson at the state Board of Education meeting as part of the award recognition process, according to the superintendent’s remarks.
Ending note: Paulson said he will remain in the classroom and represent District 6 with pride; he asked the district community to view the honor as a recognition of collective work rather than an individual achievement.
