Poteau School District leaders presented results from the Oklahoma School Testing Program (OSTP) and said changes in state cut scores account for much of the year-over-year shifts in proficiency categories.
The superintendent and Miss Tillery reviewed grades 3–8 OSTP results and compared the district with state averages. They explained that the Office of Quality and Accountability raised cut scores to 2023 levels, which reduced 'advanced' counts and increased 'proficient' classifications even where student learning levels were similar.
On district highlights, presenters said the district reduced the number of students scoring in the "below basic" category in multiple grades and subjects. Regarding 8th-grade math, the presenter called attention to the specific result: "Look at the 29% ... So the eighth grade math, only 29% of the students were below basic." The presentation emphasized that Poteau tests nearly all students (with only a 1% allowance for alternate assessments under IEP rules), and staff said site principals will work with teachers to use the data for targeted instruction.
Presenters also reviewed high-school indicators, noting that the ACT remains the focus for college readiness though state testing practice varies by state. The superintendent said principals will present site-specific data in upcoming meetings and that leadership will continue to work on strategies to move more students into proficient and advanced categories.
Board members did not make policy decisions during the presentation; the review served as an informational briefing and prompted no formal motions.
