The Mayor and Common Council recognized local veterans, proclaimed Kindness Week and Small Business Saturday, and received multiple departmental updates at the Nov. 10, 2025 meeting.
Jason, executive director of the Veterans Independence Project, thanked the council and read a proclamation honoring Mayor Mona Becker for service to veterans. He noted the organization's role in the Veterans Day parade and a banner program that decorates Main Street for events.
Mayor Mona Becker formally declared Kindness Week for Nov. 8–15, 2025, and council members praised local small businesses ahead of Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29. The mayor and representatives described plans for community outreach, including a goal for a statewide program engaging sixth graders in kindness-themed activities.
Athletics and parks updates
Jeremy Shepherd, athletic director, reported community turnout at recent events, saying "over 200 kids showed up" for a Trick-or-Treat event and that the school gave out "over 100 bags of candy," and he previewed fall and winter sports highlights and a renovated track dedicated to Dr. Richard Clow.
Recreation and parks staff and Administrator Simos described the Wakefield development as a legacy project, noted restroom renovations at City Park funded by Program Open Space and an approved change order on the consent calendar, and thanked staff (Abby Gruber) for project leadership.
Housing outreach during federal shutdown
Housing Director Brown reported targeted outreach to residents receiving SNAP benefits after a federal government shutdown: staff contacted 196 participants (196 of 262 on the base plan) with compiled county resources by email and mail to connect residents with food and community services. Brown said many recipients responded that the materials were helpful.
Public safety and other notices
The council recognized police personnel for awards and training achievements and announced the Veterans Day ceremony to take place at the Old Armory tomorrow at 4 p.m., inviting the community to attend.
Next steps
The proclamations are ceremonial and require no formal council action. Staff will continue to publicize community events, facility openings, and resources for residents who may need support with food and benefits access.
