Muscatine County supervisors on Nov. 10 approved revisions to corrections-related policies and accepted a $9,000 methamphetamine hot-spots grant for FY25–26.

Sheriff Quinn Reese described proposed changes to the handgun purchase assistance program (HPAP) and to corrections officers’ permitting to support federal inmate transports. Reese said the county had adapted its permitting process so corrections officers may obtain a corrections officer permit that covers carrying in the course of duty, while a nonprofessional permit remains an option. The board approved the policy updates to include corrections officers (motion moved and seconded; voice vote).

Reese also presented the methamphetamine hot-spots grant. "So the camp grant is one of those that we probably remember from years past," he said; staff described it as an annual grant and the board approved authorization for the chair to execute the FY25–26 agreement in the amount of $9,000.

No objections were recorded and motions to approve both items carried by voice vote. Staff indicated the HPAP revisions will not affect nonprofessional permits and that the changes aim to support staffing for federal transports and corrections operations.
