Developers proposing to renovate and expand the existing Piggly Wiggly presented an amended development plan and told the committee the main entrance must be relocated to the south side after discussions with ALDOT over the north-side entrance near the intersection.
"Part of the impetus of this particular design was that our understanding is, ALDOT was going to close that first entrance," said Robert Thompson, the project architect, explaining the need to reorient the primary customer entrance and upgrade parking and landscape standards.
Josh, the civil engineer on the project, said deliveries will remain at the current rear location (former Drake Street), which he identified as the west side of the building, and that the plan increases parking to about 150 spaces while adding stormwater management features.
Councilors asked practical questions about customer movement between the store and parking; the design team noted sidewalks will provide direct access to some parking spaces but customers may otherwise cross the access drive, and they said they would consider marked crossings or other traffic-calming measures. Staff noted the plan had received a favorable planning-commission recommendation and scheduled the council public hearing for Nov. 24 at 6 p.m.
