Bradley County’s mayor used Monday’s meeting to recognize four county employees for 30 years of service and asked the board to place a resolution on next week’s agenda that would lease the Archives Building parking lot to the city.

The mayor named Michael S. Hughes, Melita Shaver, Nancy Stanfield and Melissa Matthews as this year’s 30-year honorees and invited them forward to receive certificates and pins.

On a separate item the mayor said he has worked out an agreement with the city to lease the county’s unused parking lot at the Archives Building. He said the city would remove a bank and trees at a site on Menace Road and pave the county lot; the mayor characterized the deal as not costing taxpayers any money and asked Commissioner Thompson to place a resolution proposing the lease on the next voting-session agenda.

"They'll take down that bank ... and it won't cost the taxpayers a dime," the mayor said. He asked Commissioner Thompson to put the resolution on next week’s agenda so the commission can consider it.

Commissioner Alford asked that one or two reserved spaces be set aside for archive-related visitors or a sheriff’s deputy; the mayor said reserved spots could be accommodated and that the city wants the county to approve first before the city finalizes its work.

The commission did not take a vote on the lease Monday; the mayor requested the item be added to the formal voting session scheduled for Nov. 17.
