Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan urged Livonia residents to help neighbors who are struggling after the federal government shutdown disrupted SNAP benefits for some families, and she announced a new online map to connect people to food assistance.
"Right now, many families in our community are feeling the impact of the federal government shutdown, especially those who rely on SNAP benefits for groceries and essentials," Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan said. She asked people who can to donate to local pantries and described a new interactive resource the city will maintain.
The mayor named three local donation sites: Christ Our Savior's food pantry, Emmanuel Lutheran's community cupboard, and CARES in Farmington Hills. She said the city has created a new interactive map called the "Community Cupboard" that shows where residents can both donate food and receive assistance in Livonia and neighboring communities. "This is what a community looks like. Neighbors helping neighbors, ensuring that no one in Livonia goes hungry," Brosnan said.
Brosnan directed residents to livonia.gov for the Community Cupboard map, the City of Livonia emergency food assistance program information and a full list of nearby pantries, and said the city will continue to update the map as more information becomes available. The mayor closed by thanking residents for their support.
The statement did not specify funding sources, eligibility details, or exact hours and contact information for the pantries; those details are posted on the city's website per the mayor's remarks.
