The Michigan House on Nov. 7 adopted House Resolution 209 designating November 2025 as National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in the state. Representative Regas urged support for research and caregiver assistance while recounting his personal experience caring for a grandmother with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
“First, the forgotten names, then the forgotten stories, and then finally the spark in her eyes that said she still knew who I was, but she was unable to communicate,” Regas said as he described his grandmother Donna Born’s decline and the toll on the family. He said Michigan has “over 200,000 of our neighbors living with this cruel disease” and that more than 385,000 caregivers in the state provide unpaid support.
Regas called for additional research funding and support for caregivers, noting national projections that Alzheimer’s prevalence will rise unless steps are taken. The chamber adopted the resolution by voice vote.
The resolution recognizes caregivers, assisted-living staff, researchers, and families affected by Alzheimer’s and encourages attention to funding and services for people living with dementia.
