Poet Laureate Daniel Hansen presented the arts commission with a summary of fall programming on the literary arts calendar, describing workshops, a citywide scavenger-hunt project called Poetry in the Parks, a Poetry Okey open-mic at ArtVenture, and broadside activities at Scarecrow Fest.
Hansen said the Mesa Verde Library workshop had nine participants who read aloud, and that Poetry Okey at ArtVenture drew a steady line of 30 to 40 readers and roughly the same number of audience members. "We probably had an equal number of audience members, so I think probably a 150 people were listening to poetry or interacting with poetry that day," he said.
He described the Poetry in the Parks effort as an ongoing interactive scavenger hunt across five Costa Mesa parks and said it generated useful digital content even though public uptake was smaller than hoped. Hansen showed images from the scavenger-hunt raffle and said the program produced short videos and photographs the city can reuse for outreach.
Hansen highlighted the role of student volunteers from UCI at multiple events and described a broadside activity at Scarecrow Fest that drew an estimated 170 visitors; he shared an anecdote about a mother who breastfed at the booth while decorating a poem and remained engaged for 20 minutes, illustrating his goal of placing poetry where people gather.
Commissioners recommended outreach strategies to increase participation, including partnering with senior programs, LEAP, and homeschool families, and Hansen acknowledged kiosk and QR-code limitations at some park sites. He also noted recent media coverage in the LA Times, The Daily Pilot and Orange Coast magazine and said the poet-laureate program has scheduled repeat broadside activities at Snoopy House in December and a February workshop.
The presentation concluded with commissioners thanking Hansen and encouraging expanded park- and community-based outreach.
