The city council on Nov. 6 approved multiple amendments to Titles 10 (vehicles and traffic) and Chapter 32 (stopping, standing and parking) intended to simplify traffic controls and improve safety in neighborhood streets.
Councilman Chris Bonanno, the lead sponsor on several items, proposed an amendment to ban right turns on red at the intersection of Cranston Street and Gansett Avenue (southbound onto Cranston Street). The council adopted the amendment and passed the ordinance on roll call after the traffic engineer recommended removing time restrictions to improve clarity and enforceability.
The council also amended and approved no‑parking provisions for Poppy Drive (east side from the corner of Garden City Drive to utility pole No. 7) and added a new section to create one‑hour parking on Saturdays and Sundays for designated stretches of Hybrid Drive and Hollyhock Drive to limit continuous, all‑weekend parking. Sponsors acknowledged enforcement may be difficult but said occasional enforcement and ticketing should address long‑term misuse.
Clerk roll calls recorded affirmative votes for the ordinances after motions and amendments. Council members said changes were prompted by neighbors, crossing‑guard concerns and traffic‑engineer recommendations; no substantive opposition was recorded on the floor.
