The Elyria City School District Board of Education on Nov. 5 approved routine business and a slate of action items by roll call vote.

The board voted to approve the Oct. 15 meeting minutes and to acknowledge donations from several veterans and community organizations. Treasurer Colleen Abel presented the donations for the record; the board approved the treasurer's action items without substantive discussion.

Superintendent Anne Slosch listed and the board approved several superintendent action items, including: awarding the Elyria High School water-heater replacement bid; approving out-of-state field trips for the Elyria High JROTC to Michigan and others (robotics, eighth-grade Washington, D.C. trip, Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum for three middle schools); and approving an international field trip for Elyria High School to Ireland. Slosch noted the district reserves the right to cancel international travel approvals based on security and safety ratings.

The board also approved personnel action items, including the retirements of certified staff Jackie Hill (28 years) and Kathy Pileski (about 19 years), and the retirement of classified staff Ken Wright effective Dec. 1. The board approved appointments of certified and classified staff, athletic game workers and supplemental athletic contracts. Superintendent Slosch noted Gary Bruner, an elementary teacher, will serve as athletic faculty manager at the high school during the winter and spring seasons because the district had been unable to fill that role for the fall.
