Long-serving board director Dave Krynock used his final meeting after 20 years on the Derry Area School District board to reflect on the district's progress and the lessons he said he learned in governance.
"One of the biggest things I learned is learning how to listen," Krynock said, urging future boards to trust professional staff and avoid micromanaging. He credited hired administrators and staff for district successes and said the board's role is to support professional leadership. Krynock also noted the district's academic achievements and the importance of paying for high-quality staff.
Board members and community speakers publicly thanked Krynock. Nathan Dougherty, a parent and former board member, thanked him for his long service. Staff and community members, including teacher Michelle D'Orazio, offered praise and personal thanks. Several speakers pointed to the Hall of Fame weekend, the Kind Closet and other community programs as examples of district and community engagement during Krynock's tenure.
A community donor who spoke during public comment urged the district to simplify donation pathways so individuals can more easily give directly to classroom-level needs; district leaders indicated the foundation and business office will follow up on fundraising and donation processes.
Board members said they will honor Krynock's service and noted reorganizations to come at the December meeting when new directors are seated.
