During public comment the board paused business to publicly recognize a recent workplace injury and the emergency response. Mayor Dermody and department staff described the Oct. incident in which a tailgate fell during material loading and part of a street employee’s thumb was severed. Jeff Bachelor and Mike Frase (street department supervisors) described the response and credited Tanisha Griffin for stopping bleeding and keeping the injured employee calm until further care arrived.

At the microphone Jim Sims addressed the board and said he was recovering: “I went yesterday. He looked down. It’s looking good,” and staff noted stitches remain and follow‑up care may include therapy. Mayor Dermody and colleagues invited the employees for a photograph and publicly thanked street department staff who assisted at the scene and afterward.

No formal action was required; the board’s public remarks were recognition and appreciation for employee response and for the department’s subsequent support.
