The Board of Public Works and Safety heard a quote opening for downtown drainage and pedestrian improvements at the northeast corner of Michigan and Lincoln Way, a project that will replace failing pavers, improve ADA access and install a green‑infrastructure “storm tree” to reduce pooling.

Tucker King of Tucker King Engineering explained that this was a quoting process (not a formal bid) and two quotes were received: Pavey Excavating Company ($102,097) and La Porte County Project Management ($175,296). King said the project calls for concrete replacements in the interest of durability and to meet accessibility standards, with some decorative paver strips retained in the broader pattern book.

Mayor Dermody and staff emphasized the goal of completing the work this year. The board moved to approve selection of the lowest responsive quote (Pavey Excavating) conditioned on further engineering and legal review and subject to the city’s $150,000 quote threshold and department sign‑offs.

Staff presented the project as a downtown reinvestment and a test site for a stormwater tree concept; the design includes replacing older pavers with stamped concrete slabs where appropriate and adding stormwater capture features to address standing water.

No final contract was executed during the meeting; the board’s approval was limited to selecting the lowest quote pending formal review.
