County staff briefed supervisors on a statewide residential safe‑room reimbursement grant being offered through NEMA and encouraged residents to consult the county website for application details.
"We put the information out, on our web site, done media releases. It's a pretty stringent process, but it's a, reimbursement grant. You have to spend the money, and then you can get up to, I think, $3,500 back," a county staff member told the board during the Nov. 6 meeting. Staff said the county will post grant guidance to the website and field inquiries from homeowners.
Supervisors and audience members asked whether the grant applied to individual homeowners; staff confirmed that the program targets homeowners installing above‑ground or in‑ground safe rooms and similar storm‑shelter measures. One resident asked about typical installed costs; a staff member said prior projects suggested contractor prices historically ranged between about $5,000 and $7,000 and could be higher, with another comment estimating $7,000 to $10,000 depending on shelter type and site conditions.
Staff said Miss Carter (county web administrator) will post the application information and that the county has already received calls from residents seeking details.
Ending: The county will publish grant guidance on its website and respond to resident inquiries; no county financial commitment or matching program was approved during the meeting.
