Human Resources provided the Commissioners Court with an operational update on the Tax Assessor‑Collector’s office and HB 718 implementation on Nov. 3.
Staffing and backlog: HR reported 10 current vacancies in the tax office; four of those positions were expected to be filled by the following Monday, two additional positions to be filled in January, and multiple internal promotions were under background check. HR said recent Saturday processing sessions produced substantial reductions (about 1,500 transactions completed during a prior Saturday session) and that the current backlog stood at 3,989 transactions; the figure excludes drop‑off and mailed transactions.
Overtime authorization: HR said the office had used approximately 62% of an earlier $10,000 overtime authorization and asked for additional overtime for further Saturday sessions. The court authorized up to an additional $10,000 for overtime to support continued weekend processing and directed staff to provide weekly updates on backlog progress.
Process and outreach: HR and the tax office described training for dealers and noted that the county will continue onboarding temporary staff ahead of the next tax season. Commissioners requested a weekly error report from the tax office so dealers can correct common submission mistakes and reduce rework.
